Edwards to Endorse Obama
Added 636 days ago on May 14th, 2008
Barack Obama's campaign is touting a "major endorsement" of his candidacy tonight and the endorser is former Sen. John Edwards, according to sources close to the former North Carolina senator and the Obama campaign.
Mr. Edwards, who dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination Jan. 30, placed second in the Iowa caucuses in early January and was a favorite of the party's liberal wing. In West Virginia, where he appeared on the ballot, and Sen. Hillary Clinton won in stunning fashion, Mr. Edwards garnered 7% of the vote - a surprise for a candidate who dropped out of the race before "Super Tuesday" voting in early February.
Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Mr. Edwards will join Sen. Obama at his Grand Rapids, Mich., rally where he will announce his endorsement.
Mr. Edwards could give a boost to Obama's candidacy by attracting the exact sort of voter that has been Sen. Clinton's strength - white, working-class voters from rust-belt states who are drawn to a populist political philosophy but have mostly rejected the senator from Illinois. Sen. Clinton, vastly outgunned in delegate count and popular vote by Sen. Obama has nonetheless kept her candidacy alive by arguing - somewhat successfully - that such voters will be crucial in November.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Significant, Edwards represents the populist vote and he will campaign on behalf of his constituency.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Sorry, but this stinks. Edwards is a coward who waited until the coast was clear and then offered his service to the strongest bidder.

Before North Carolina, his endorsement for either candidate would have had some impact, now he is only one ordinary Superdelegate, who did not have the guts to stand up for one candidate when the going was tough. On the other hand, Edwards was not able to make a splash in the primaries and failed to bring even his homestate in for Kerry in 2004, left alone any other southern state.

This is not an endorsement to be proud of, especially since he was way closer to Clinton for a long time that to Obama. Obama's health care plan is a joke and he vigorously refused to take up any of Edwards pet projects, like to end poverty, so this endorsement does not make any sense at all, other than soften the blow of the resounding defeat in West Virginia, where Obama failed to win just ONE district.

It is a pity that Edwards dropped out so early, because he would have harmed Obama more than Hillary. Or to put it the other way round; Obama profited most by Edwards dropping out.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Well, that interesting. For weeks, Obama has been downplayed, not electable, and it goes on. He's a remarkly individual unlike those who critize him. It going to say, just like that Christ who was persecuted by his people and put to death, yet he rose from the dead) if you can't beat him, join him. If you choose not to vote for him...its o.k. there are a million others who will.

Go Obama Go

Yes, we can.........

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
so, bish66 you were all for an Edwards- Clinton deal, but now that Edwards is for our guy he's suddenly a "coward". Nice!

I will say, personally, I think Edwards is as phony as they come and was only holding out for a V.P. position regardless of who gave it to him, but there are people who think he is the greatest thing since sliced bread; so whatever.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Ok, so now Obama is being compared to Christ? Well I guess the media has pretty much done that already...but come on.... Obama is a politician, just like the rest of them...Oh, except he is the least experienced.

Good idea, let's nominate the weakest link. Then he can join McGovern, Dukakis, Mondale, Gore, and Kerry in the elitist losers club. We can throw Edwards in there as well...he lost with Kerry, then again in the primary.

Dear Frances2533
I don't like Edwards that much. He came across as oily, phoney and ridiculous. A millionaire laywer who poses as a working class hero. His attacks on Hillary in the debates in New Hampshire and South Carolina were meanspirited. I mean, a has-(not-really-)been calls Clinton 'Status Quo'! He was so over, right ffrom the beginning.

Nevertehless, his endorsement would have helped in North Carolina. After North Carolina, his usefullness is reduced to the 18 delegates he managed to win and to make a headline for Obama-under-pressure.

He had some demands and Clinton fulfiled them.
He and his wife talked to both candidates and the rumour was that Clinton did far better in negotiating.
Elizabeth Edwards lauded Hillary's health care plan, so all signs said that they would rather endorse her than him or that the couple would split, she endorsing Hillary, he endorsing Obama.

After months of flirting, he finally jumps on the seemingly winning bandwagon, blowing his chance to act as elder statesman at the convention. Instead of sticking out his head and reputation when the outcome was open, he decides to join the presumed winner. THAT I call cowardice.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
One person, even if he is well known, cannot clinch the nomination. Someone show me an aggregate list of endorsements please. If there is a greater percentage of 538+ governmental representatives who have endorsed him, then yes. Otherwise unknown...

It would be nice if the Obama administration would repeal or amend the Patriot act, bring troops home, stop illegal wire-tappings, etc. But I doubt that he will reduce the power that Bush and Cheney has given to future presidents; why would he?
I honestly doubt that he is going to help our economy, but he will further erode our Constitution.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Edwards claimed throughout his whole campaign to support the very people who are going out and voting for Hillary, the poor, soon to be poor middle class, the hard-working people who are the backbone of this country. The real people who are struggling every day to make ends meet. These are the people voting for Hillary. John Edwards claimed to be a champion for these people. Ha! Obama is getting the so-called educated vote and the people who are rich and better off. This is where he starts to play the game of politics and tries to appeal to the so-called uneducated and lower class people. So to say that Obama will be the big change this country needs is bull. By his endorsement of Obama, Edwards has just turned his back on the people he said he would fight for. Hillary is the true fighter--the media, people who are blinded by their hatred for "the Clintons'"-----(stupidity) Were you better off eight years ago? You can only answer yes to that if you were living on this planet. Stupidity and ungratefullness elected us for the last eight years the worst President in history! Look at the shape this country is in now!! Are you paying attention??? I think not. The best ticket for this country right now is Hillary/President & Obama/Vice President--this is a smart ticket and a winning one. But the media and the people blinded by stupid and ungratefull hate will again decide this for those of us who voted the smart and informed way the last two elections but lost. And we lost big. Pathetic.

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
Senator Edwards is not a superdelegate. He could have some clout and he has pledged delegates that could follow his lead and support Obama. That would make Obama's lead more substantial. What is wrong with this picture is that Edwards refused to endorse prior to NC and his wife was clearly endorsing Clinton. Edwards stands for the working class and those slipping to the poverty level.. West Virginia has the highest rate of people on food stamps and who have been most affected by the economy . So, why does he endorse Obama after Clinton wins that state by 41 points? Obama did not see fit to even campaign in that state so he abandoned those voters in WV and now Edwards endorses Obama after the voters were loud and clear tht Obama does not relate to the working class. This was calculated and choreographed. I wonder what Edwards was promised for such an endorsement?

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
I am not upper class: we make $24,000 before taxes a year: for 3 people, granted I'm a stay at home mom right now and we're good with our money and don't blow it on stuff we can't afford, but I am far from upper class, and i am for Obama, as are most of the people i know who are in or around our income level as well. Obama does not just appeal to upper class people and college graduates: my husband and I both are only high school graduates. You do realize that upper class only makes up 1% of this country, right?

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
frances2533--How can you possibly live on that amount of money, even just buying the neccesities-food, fuel, housing, clothing? How? Where do you live? I don't understand how it is possible. If Obama appeals to you, that is your perrogative. If I have to ,I will vote for him, I do not believe he is the right choice for President--I believe Hillary is. But I will not vote for John McCain-another Bush. Republicans are not fighters for the people, they fight for big business, guns and oil. But I feel the Democrats are on the way to choosing the wrong candidate-Hillary will do better in the general election--the Republicans are going to pound him. Hillary is more of a uniter than people give her credit for-she walks the talk. Go Hillary-fight to the End!

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
We only buy necessities pretty much all year and wait to get the things we want: bigger items, when we get our taxes back.

We don't go out much; I have a grocery store literally like a half a block or less from our apartment, and our rent is pretty cheap; $395 a month. Electric is high for an 2 bedroom apartment that has less than 900 square feet, at $70-90 a month, but I've cut out using the oven: I microwave or electric skillet everything (no frozen foods; all recipes for those items) and I keep the air where it only kicks in if it's above 78 in here: we use fans.

We don't go out much: maybe 6 times a year or something like that: unless its' something free. The internet and Netflix are our sources of entertainment: we don't buy cable. We have a car payment: of $250 a month, too. But we're really good with our money, like I said: we just try not to spend much on anything except food, and I've cut out driving except when I need to, although my husband's work is across town: we have a Saturn, so it's gets decent gas mileage: I only have to fill it up once a week or less: at $28 or so per time.

Edwards is hoping for a reward..VP...The very people he said he represented-middle class blue collar workers must be devestated on his choice. FLIP-FLOP
Edwards is now showing a clear lack of judgement--Hey they have alot in common!!!!

Re: Edwards to Endorse Obama
I think Obama is more in touch with "blue collar workers" because he lived for 2 or 3 years on $10,000 per year (turned down a job as a lawyer) to help people in his community (community service: by his own choice) who had lost their jobs due to steel mill closings.

We are blue collar workers in Nebraska, the breadbasket of America. We don't like Obama. If Hillary doesn't win the nominee it will be McCain all the way!!
