Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
Added 820 days ago on June 5th, 2008
Most aspiring presidents and prime ministers face a myriad of challenges as they embark on their journey. Controversial issues, questions about ethics or past conduct, wounds within their party all raise their heads. But the doubts that Barack Obama faces are far more existential than the superficial questions about most candidates. They go to his very core as a person, calling into question his values, his world view, even his patriotism.
The disjuncture between who he is and what his background and associations suggest he might be, is so profound that it leads to the most basic of doubts and worries among American voters.
Hard racial divisions have softened in America, but fear of the "other" persists. Their possible next president has a strange name. He grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. He had a Muslim Kenyan father who left when he was a baby. He made his political career in the cesspool of American politics - the traditionally corrupt Chicago Democratic machine.
I doubt that this election will be close. Either Mr Obama or John McCain will win it in a landslide, depending on whether or not Mr Obama can fulfil his existential mission of explaining to the American people who he really is.

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
How about "Worst loss in American history" as a choice? Talk about pro-Obama polls, this is the worst one yet!

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
No, james2044, "Worst loss in American history" is not possible. Just by winning his home state of Illinois, he will surpass his two latest endorsers, Mondale and McGovern. And Democrats always win Washington DC, so add another 3 votes. And then there is Hawaii and another 4 votes.

So, with 28 votes he will be somewhere between McGovern's 17 and Jimmy Carter's (another late endorsement...) 49...

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
The general election will be tight. Reason (1) Both McCain and Obama are drawning up strategies for the following states (MI, OH, PA, VWA, and IL). McCain is betting that if he can win 4 of the 5, he will win the general election. As for Obama, He's looking at (PA, OH, MI, CO, VA). At this period in time his campaign feels that they can carry all 5.

As time draws near - let's say a month before the general election - there should be some evidence on who's strategy will carry.

Side note: Of all the possible VP candidates for the Dems, I see Governor Rendall a likely choise - Reason: He can pull PA for Obama and OH may follow suite. ??????

HillaryClinton.com DAMAGING
I do think he'll win by a landslide. However, I used to support Hillary. But I have to admit - I'm ashamed to be counted among her supporters (or former), because of the rampant immaturity among them.

The moderators on her website must be in the 3rd grade. Countless posts have been made trying to put through the message that we really need unity in the party. So this Lindsay Levin or whoever the moderator is, is only allowing messages through from the infantile people who claim that since Hillary didn't get the nom, they're going to vote for McCain!!! How insane!

It's a slap in the face to Hillary, to even suggest one should vote for McCain, who stands for all the damaging ideals that Hillary fought so hard against in her campaign.

I can't believe they're all like that. There can't be that many stupid people, can there? Well, however many there are, Hillary better do something about the elementary school kids running her website.

Not that it matters. It will be a dead horse in a matter of days anyway.

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
Even the dead can only cover so much. IL is a toss up as the Dems maynot want to hand all power to the South Side. I can see them doing just enough to not get yelled at later. PA, NJ, NY, FL, OH have very little reason to like Obama and even more reasons to fear his actions as President.
Totally unqualified, anti-American and a Black raciest are not good talkiing points.

Democrats will lose if they believe that they will this easily. How naive can you be to believe that it would be landslide.

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
Ask the question again in a month or so! We should have a better fix at that time.

Re: Could Barack Obama win a landslide?
A landslide, if and only if the Democratic Party has the sense to put Hillary Rodham Clinton on the ticket. Over 18 million people came out in her support during the primary.

As a rule, only a fraction of voters even bother to participate in primaries, so the number of supporters is in the hundreds of millions. The math is simple, if Obama really wants this, he will go for the dream ticket, exciting millions.

Al Gore saw what happened when running a close race. History has taught us that a
"dream ticket" with 2 candidates is the only way to guarantee a landslide vote. The numbers are necessary to override any tampering at the polls which have denied the ture outcome of the past 2 contests (2000 and 2004).

If the DNC fails to see the wisdom in the numbers, then they deserve to loose.
