Obama speech more than 'a show?'
Added 327 days ago on October 11th, 2009
When President Barack Obama addresses the Human Rights Campaign at its annual fundraising dinner Saturday, he may well be competing with Lady Gaga for attention. And like the pants-less pop star, he is already stirring up controversy.Obama's speech is an effort to make some inroads with a constituency that has accused the White House of failing to live up to its promises on the Defense of Marriage Act, "don't ask, don't tell" and other issues. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese says he is "honored to share this night with President Obama, who has called upon our nation to embrace [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people as brothers and sisters." Others, however, are calling it "stagecraft" and "simply a show."

The Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA") is a basic legal protection for the vital institution of marriage in the United States. It was passed to placate the majority of citizens (who are heterosexual) when a few states began allowing civil unions for sexual minority members. Through civil unions, homosexuals, lesbians and transgendered people enjoy all the same legal rigths as the heterosexual majority.
