the hill ^ by meghashyam mali - 12 — President Obama, whose Christmas vacation was delayed by the protracted payroll tax debate in Washington, spent Christmas Eve playing golf in Hawaii.

Obama headed for a round of golf Saturday at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Pool reports said Obama was joined by friends from Chicago and Hawaii and White House staffers.

The first lady meanwhile helped answer calls for NORAD Tracks Santa a program where volunteers receive calls from children inquiring about the location of Santa Claus.

Reports said the Obamas were joined on his Hawaiian trip by a close family and friends.

The president has no public events planned during the weekend and are expected to return to Washington D.C. in the new year.

Obama landed in Hawaii with his dog Bo on early Friday evening after signing a deal extending a payroll tax holiday for two months.

The president's family was already in Hawaii but Obama's trip was delayed as House Republicans initially rejected a Senate-passed payroll tax bill. Obama had urged lawmakers to stay in town until their work was finished.

But on Thursday, the House GOP capitulated after pressure from Senate Republicans and signs they were losing the tax debate among voters.
