realclearpolitics.com — With Rick Santorum suspending his campaign and in effect ending the GOP primary battle, the Obama campaign is marking the unofficial start of the general election with a Web video that uses Mitt Romney's own words to label him "severely conservative."

Obama's campaign on Wednesday released the two-minute-long video, called "Mitt Romney: Memories to Last a Lifetime," highlighting such controversial Romney campaign lines as "corporations are people, my friend" and "I like being able to fire people." As Republicans "settle" on their presidential candidate, an opening caption reads, "let's take a look at some of the unforgettable moments from this unforgettable primary." The video features clips of Romney voicing support for Republican Rep. Paul Ryan's controversial budget plan, overturning the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade abortion decision, and cutting government ties to Planned Parenthood.

The spot also includes Romney advocating that the housing market be allowed to "hit bottom" in order to solve the foreclosure crisis; that "Obamacare should be repealed"; and that the immigration legislation known as the DREAM Act, if passed by Congress, should be vetoed.

"Mitt Romney: Severely conservative nominee. Remember that," reads the closing caption, referring to the way in which the former governor characterized himself during a speech at CPAC in February.

President Obama will continue today in his opening salvo against presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, attacking tax policies that allow investors, including the very rich, like Romney, to pay a 15 percent tax rate on income from their portfolios.

Running for re-election on a slate of proposed tax increases is a tough task, especially given the saggy state of the economy. But Obama has a message he and his campaign believe is toxic to the chances of a Republican nominee who is from the ranks of the super rich. Romney wants voters to think about his success in turning around struggling companies as a CEO. Obama wants them to think about the car elevators that are going into Romney’s beachfront estate in California.

Speaking of economic experience... -- Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen lashed out at Ann Romney Wednesday night, TheDC's Caroline May reports:

"Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen opened a can of worms on Wednesday night when she suggested that GOP front-runner Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann Romney, is not qualified to discuss the economic issues plaguing Americans because she 'never actually worked a day in her life' ... 'What you have is Mitt Romney running around the country saying, ‘Well, you know, my wife tells me that what women really care about are economic issues’ and, ‘When I listen to my wife, that’s what I’m hearing,' she said. 'Guess what? His wife has never actually worked a day in her life.'"

Isn't that Hilary Rosen sweet? But since we are on the topic of economic experience, how about that President Obama. He just has LOADS of economic experience. Oh, wait a minute. He actually had nearly none before being elected president. But you know who has a bushel of economic experience? A certain gentleman named Mitt Romney. Perhaps it's not the smartest strategy for the Democrats to instigate a debate over economic experience.
