Republican Nevada Caucus - Prediction Time!
Added 1954 days ago in
Opinion
newsweek.com —
As State Archivist Guy Rocha said recently, the road to the White House now goes through Nevada because Saturday's statewide caucuses will help to clarify presidential nomination races in both major parties. As I write, it appears that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will battle it out for the Democratic nomination while John McCain and Mitt Romney are the top Republican contenders.
The Nevada Republican Party is also holding caucuses on Jan. 19, but the leading GOP candidates have largely ignored Nevada and none has announced any plans to visit. The only campaigning of note was a round of push-poll phone calls received by hundreds of Nevadans on Sunday that asked leading questions designed to encourage support for former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who came in third in the Gazette-Journal poll, with 16 percent. Sen. John McCain of neighboring Arizona was in the lead, with 22 percent of the vote, followed by former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani at 18 percent. Despite a large Mormon population in the state, Mitt Romney polled a disappointing fourth.

Few voters actually inquire about a candidate's qualifications. Ron Paul is not only a medical doctor, but also a counselor at the Von Mises Institute of Economics. John McCain is a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran who is also the son of a Navy Admiral. When his captors found out about McCain's social status, they treated him better than his fellow captives. Mitt Romney is also the son of politician from the sixties and a businessman. All I know about Huckabee is that he is a theologian.
