ap.google.com — "You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

In the midst of an assault from his rivals, a defensive Barack Obama said Friday that many working-class Americans are angry and bitter over economic inequalities and have lost faith in Washington - and, as a result, vote on the basis of other issues such as gun protections or gay marriage.

The Illinois senator's analysis of what motivates working-class voters came after chief rival Hillary Rodham Clinton accused him of looking down on such voters. Clinton rebuked Obama on Friday for similar remarks he made privately last Sunday to a group of donors in San Francisco.

"People don't vote on economic issues because they don't expect anybody is going to help them," Obama told a crowd at a Terre Haute, Ind., high school Friday evening. "So people end up voting on issues like guns and are they going to have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and their community, and their family, and the things they can count on. But they don't believe they can count on Washington."

The Huffington Post Web site reported Friday that Obama, speaking of some Pennsylvanians' economic anxieties, told supporters at the San Francisco fundraiser: "You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years. ... And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

In Terre Haute, Obama said he did describe some voters as bitter when a donor asked why working-class voters in Pennsylvania were not getting behind his campaign.scarded them.

No! The Senator was right on the mark. What have these individuals done to make their life better. Probably nothin. Instead they cry foul if it doesn't please them and any scraps they can get off the table is OK because they didn't have to earn it. The jobs in Ohio, Pennsylvania and those other areas that were hard hit by NAFTA are GONE. There's no way in hell that they will return - What have they done to improve their life style, etc. These individuals needs to get a life - They fall into the category of Piss Poor Planning leave to nothing.

Many people are really far from reality. Now why would the SMALL TOWN residents BE HAPPY AND READY TO ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES, FAR WORST COMMENT FROM HILLARY "OPTIMISTIC"

BILLARY SIGNED THE NAFTA B.S. AND AS WE SPEAK....MORE JOBS ARE FOLDING ON PENNSYLVANNIA.

HILLARY SHOULD ZIP HER MOUTH WITH THE BOSNIA, LIE AFTER LIE FROM HER AND DUMB ASS BILL. I THINK THEY BOTH NEED TO TAKE A WEEK OFF AND HAVE A DRINK TOGETHER, MAYBE FIND MONICA AND GIVE BILL A LITTLE PLEASURE....IT APPEARS HILLARY HAS NOT BEEN THERE.

PLEASE TELL ME THAT MOST OF WHITE AMERICA IS NOT PROGRAMMED BY Sean hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Laura Ingram........IF SO, THEN "SHAME ON THEM"

Here is how someon put it (it's dead on):
"When a town dies because its businesses fail, and the frantic efforts to keep it going sputter and fizzle out, and then nothing else happens to provide hope for anything but holding on, the people who live there will feel very naturally that something or somebody has visited this situation on them as if it was a plague. The town didn't die because of what the people who live there did, it was something outside. So when they see special benefits being "handed out" to illegal immigrants, or feel that somebody is trying to "take the second amendment from them", or that some international deal is being cut to help Mexico when nobody is helping Pennsylvanians, they'll react - and the reaction will be marinated in the bitterness that has surrounded the town for decades. Senator Obama has it right. And he might understand that words of hope aren't going to move these people to vote for him now. And if he wants their votes next time, he's going to need to deliver something that counts to these communities - something that makes hope more than another sweet-sounding word."

What Obama said relects the truth and I can't agree with him more. McCain and Hillary are out of touch and baby talking the American people and I hope this time people see that and call them out on it. Obama isn't gonna baby talk you and give you what you want to hear "political correctness" he's gonna tell it like it is and that's why I support him. McCain and Hillary need to take some time and take a good look at themselves because they're the ones out of touch, condesending and elitist. THEY HAVE MORE MONEY THAN OBAMA AND HAVE MUCH LONGER REP WITH THE ELITE THAN OBAMA! C'mon America don't be fooled by them again!

Obama's comments about working-class Americans being bitter and angry because our government has failed us time and again is a refreshingly honest account of what has been going on in America for decades.

Hillary and McCain want working-class Americans to put a happy face, while they stab us in the back. This has been their tactic for decades.

The Clintons and the McCains - the 100-million-dollar blue collar wannabes - are now asking us: "What's wrong? Smile! Put a happy face on! "

"We know we've devastated your communities:
- by neglecting the needs of the working-class,
- by pushing NAFTA to benefit corporations at your expense,
- by giving tax breaks for major corporations who never hesitate when they exploit and toss you out on the street to then ship your job to China"

Hillary and McCain keep saying, "Don't forget. You are a proud American! It's un-American to be angry with this government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations. Remember, you are optimistic, hardworking and resilient people. True patriots! So, just put your happy face on and suck it up!"

Wake up America! How long are we going to let these blood-sucking politicians take us for fools? We are not going to put on a fake smile when our livelihood is being destroyed, when our way of life is disappearing before our eyes…devastating job loses, rising fuel, food and healthcare costs, crumbling schools.

Be happy? Be optimistic? Be American and suck it up? And they stab us in the back!

This has to be THE election we say, 'No, not again!"

Let's send Hillary and McCain a message. Let's tell them "No, not this time!"

Post Why I am bitter:
1) I am bitter because of the state of our economy
2) I am bitter because our jobs are being shipped overseas
3) I am bitter because we are fighting a war we shouldn't have waged.
4) I am bitter because we are spending $10b every month in Iraq, money that we need seriously here.
5) I am bitter that Iraq has about $50b of its money lodged in foreign account, while we are using tax payer's money to rebuild the country.
6) I am bitter that we are losing the effort to catch Osama Bin Laden.
7) I am bitter that our great country has lost its respect in the international forum.
8) I am bitter that our dollars has become a laughing stock of the world. That right here in the states, some businesses no longer accepts the dollar as a legal tender.
9) I am bitter because hardworking folks are being laid off their jobs and have lost all their savings.
10) I am bitter that honest and hard working folks are facing foreclosures.
11) I am bitter because the solution to the foreclosure problem from our law makers is to reward the mortgage banks and people who created the problem in the first place, while providing nothing for the people at the risk of losing their homes.
12) I am bitter because we keep borrowing from china and other countries, thereby leaving debts upon debts for the future generation.
13) I am bitter because there are so many other reasons why I should be bitter and our government is doing nothing to fix it.
14) Finally, I am bitter because the only person amongst our presidential candidates who recognizes that I'm bitter and that I have a genuine reason to be is being crucified for saying the truth.

I live in Philadelphia, where people have resorted to all these thing, gun and our crime rate shows this. religion, prayer for safty, voting against NAFTA, because of job lost, pointing finger at people who don't conform to the norm, voting for border control. WHY, BECAUSE THEY ARE BITTER!

PEOPLE YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS, FOR IT IN YOUR LIVING ROOMS, BUT AGAINST IT IN PUBLIC.

REMEMBER WHAT HE PROMISED YOU!
"I don't intend to be a President who tells you what you want to hear...but rather, a President who tells you what you need to hear in order to try and move this country forward.

How in the world is obama telling his contributers why he can't win PA that it is because he is black and that the small town people are bitter so they turn to guns, god, and bigotry, true? Not only was this blatantly arrogant and elitist, it shows the lack of character and understanding obama has of people. obama will never win the Presidency if nominated and all of you trying to spin his comments to something it wasn't about are as ignorant to the facts as obama.

Obama is the only candidate that actually sees what's going on in the REAL world! Hillary should spend a few more weeks in rural America! Maybe spend a month or two on welfare to see how the OTHER SIDE lives! No, I am not on welfare but I sure see a lot of people who are because they can't even get a job flipping hamburgers! Even if they were able to get that job flipping hamburgers, they couldn't afford to drive to work! The cost of gas is so outrageous that even the middle class have a hard time justifying filling up their tanks!
