Meet the Hypocrites: Governor Mark Sanfordi4.ytimg.com

nwprogressive.org — For the better part of the last thirty years the Republican Party has claimed the mantle of family values, as being a party morally superior to others.

And once again that image has taken a hit, as Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC) has followed the same path of Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston, Rudy Giuliani, John Ensign, David Vitter, Larry Craig, Mark Foley and others by admitting to having an affair with a woman from Argentina. The State, South Carolina's most widely read newspaper, has uncovered a steamy e-mail exchange between the two, saying it will release the full exchange for tomorrow's print edition.

Sanford, who voted for the impeachment of President Clinton when he was a member of Congress, reacted angrily when confronted with the news that Speaker-designate Bob Livingston had cheated on his wife in 1998.

I don't believe that personal morality, amongst politicians or anyone else for that matter, is a partisan issue at all. There are very moral and upright people belonging to both of the major political parties, and everyone is human and presumably subject to moral failings or temptations. Today so many complex issues are dealt with by the media using one word simplistic labels such as: "left" "right" "conservative" "liberal" etc.,..and it is ridiculous because a label cannot accurately describe indivual viewpoints about complex moral and political issues.

Complex they maybe, human very much so, but when you live in a glass house it's best to shut up and not throw rocks at others. The Republican Party has claimed the mantle of family values and sold itself based on these issues. They need not to claim themselves as morally superior.

Well I do agree with you Jane60 that no political party can claim family values as its own exclusive issue. In my opinion, the rights of children deserve more concern from all political parties.
