politico.com — George W. Bush's job approval rating as president has spiked to 47 percent, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

That's 1 point higher than President Barack Obama's job approval rating in a poll taken the same week.

This is the first time Gallup asked Americans to retrospectively rate Bush's job performance. And it was a stunning turnaround from his low point of 25 percent in November 2008. The 47 percent number is 13 points higher than the last Gallup poll taken before Bush left office in 2009 and the highest rating for him since before Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Still, Bush's 51 percent disapproval rating means he's only one of two U.S. presidents in the past 50 years whose disapproval exceeds approval. The other is Richard Nixon, who resigned in disgrace 36 years ago and whose approval rating stands at 29 percent.

Obama's stumbles and dimming public memories of Bush's shortcomings appear to be helping fuel the more positive reassessment of him. And, in recent weeks, Bush's tour to promote his new memoir, "Decision Points," and the groundbreaking of his new library in Dallas have generated mostly positive press.

Bush's 47 percent approval rating also raises serious questions about the wisdom of the White House's decision to relentlessly attack him in the months before the Democrats' historic losses in the midterm elections. The president had kept warning a House Republican majority would return to Bush-era policies. But Obama's message did little to galvanize the liberal base, and ind

What choice do they have?

They won't admit that their ideas are stupid and they have failed at running the country. This is the worst goverment America has ever had. Obama is an ass, Pelosi is a bitch and Reid is a fool. Together they have ruined everything they touched.

Perhaps when Republican stop blaming President Obama for everything, Democrats will stop blaming President George W. Bush for everything? Maybe by that point, an Independent who is a genuine patriot will be running this country.

Joy, the point here is that blaming Bush seems to be at least partially responsible for his resurgence. Blaming Obama, as the current sitting President is not having a similar effect.

People may or may not agree with current criticisms of Obama but it is the natural course of events. With Bush, people are starting to remember that until the housing bubble burst in 2008, we had very low unemployment and despite the cost of two wars, inflation was low and so were taxes. The more the Democrats bring up Bush the more people remember that things were much better back then for the vast majority of Americans.

Joy, one more point, regarding the blame due Bush or Obama, most Americans haven't a clue of the role of Congress in the conditions in America. They seem to think of the President as an omnipotent king of some kind, with complete power over all aspects of the economy, the environment and foreign relations. They fail to understand the Legislative Branch often has and wields more power than the President in many aspects of our daily lives. Therefore, what might be seen as a failure of Bush or Obama often is more aptly placed at the feet of Congress.
