There are two problems with raising taxes. First, it takes money out of the hands of the individuals who earned it. Second, it is ostensibly done to pay for the current spending requirements but invariably it is used for other things. In this case it would be raised to pay off the debt but it will be used to simply grow the size of governement.

You posed the question with the phrase "reduce the nation debt." Our biggest problem with the debt is that for the last 40 years no politicians have even talked about the national debt! The talke about reducing the DEFICIT wich is what we ADD TO the debt each year. Why, they want to give handouts to buy votes to keep them in power.

We need to change the discourse to from how to reduce the deficit, to how to reduce the debt. If that doesn't happen, our children and grandchildren are all destined for abject poverty and there won't be a damn thing they can do about it except move to another country.
